Tracy Farms, Tracy Cannabis Collective and X1 are each within half a mile in a straight line of the Tracy Transit Station, while STIIIZY on West Clover Road is about 2 miles away and Garden of Eden on West Grant Line Road and Embarc on Pavilion Parkway are about 2.3 to 2.9 miles away. The Tracy ACE station at 4800 South Tracy Boulevard runs westbound trains toward San Jose and eastbound trains toward Stockton, with free parking for ACE passengers only.

In TRACER's live route data, the ACE station stop is served only by the morning and evening runs of Commuter Route F, which also stop at the Tracy Transit Station. The Tracy Transit Station at 50 East 6th Street is where San Joaquin RTD buses connect to other San Joaquin County cities, and Tracy Farms is about 0.3 miles from it.

By car, the city describes Tracy as sitting in a triangle formed by Interstates 580, 205 and 5, about an hour from Sacramento, San Francisco and San Jose. Embarc says its store is just off the 205 on Pavilion Parkway, and Tracy Farms says it is reachable from Interstate 205 via East 10th Street.

Tracy's licensed stores sit in three areas. Downtown, Tracy Farms is at 951 North Central Avenue just off East 10th Street, about 0.3 miles in a straight line from the Tracy Transit Station at 50 East 6th Street, about 0.2 miles from the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts and about 0.1 miles from the Tracy Historical Museum. Tracy Cannabis Collective on East 10th Street and X1 on West 11th Street are also within half a mile of the station, and STIIIZY on West Clover Road in north Tracy is about 2 miles from it.

On the west side near Interstate 205, Garden of Eden at 2420 West Grant Line Road and Embarc on Pavilion Parkway are about 0.5 miles apart, and 2.3 to 2.9 miles in a straight line west of the transit station. Garden of Eden customers park in the lot between Carl's Jr and National Petroleum on Grant Line Road, per the operator, and Embarc says it has free customer parking next to the store.

Downtown parking follows a simple rule from the Tracy City Center Association: under two hours, use the street; longer stays go in the public lots. The Grand Theatre points visitors to free street parking and public lots at 6th Street and Central Avenue.

Tracy exists because two rail lines met here. The Yokuts lived in this part of the San Joaquin Valley long before the railroad; on 8 Sep 1878 a new Southern Pacific line from Oakland joined the Central Pacific line three miles east of the Ellis coaling station, and the new town was named for Lathrop J. Tracy, a grain merchant and railroad director from Mansfield, Ohio.

Ellis residents followed the railroad east. On 1 Mar 1894 the railroad moved its Lathrop headquarters to Tracy, and the city incorporated in 1910. By the 1950s agriculture was Tracy's main industry, and the town stayed near 11,000 people into the 1960s before Bay Area growth spilled over the Altamont Pass.

Downtown's landmark is the Grand Theatre on Central Avenue, which opened on 11 Aug 1923 as a vaudeville house. The city-owned Grand Theatre Center for the Arts opened on the block in September 2007 and starts its 20th season in 2026.

The Tracy Dry Bean Festival, first organized in 1987 to raise money for community charities, was renamed the Taste of the Valley Art and Food Festival in 2014. That December the Tracy Chamber of Commerce said it would no longer organize the festival.
