Ukiah at a glance
Ukiah sits on US-101 in Mendocino County. DCC license data refreshed 22 Sep 2026 list 9 active retailer licenses and 5 active microbusiness licenses with a Ukiah address. Not all of them are inside city limits: DCC records put Kure at 1480 South State Street under Mendocino County jurisdiction, while Cannavine on Airport Park Boulevard, Vibe by California at 441 North State Street and Heritage Mendocino at 1076 Cunningham Street are inside the City of Ukiah.
Ukiah has a written path to on-site consumption. City code lets a retailer run a designated consumption area with a use permit: an outdoor area may allow smoking, vaping and edibles, and an indoor area is limited to edibles. Smoking or vaping cannabis in public places, including streets and sidewalks, is banned.
This page is for drivers on US-101 heading to the Mendocino coast, and for visitors who want the Emerald Triangle story straight. Plan for heat in summer: Ukiah's July normal high is 91.1 F, and the town averages 60.9 days a year at 90 F or above.

By car, take US-101. Visit Ukiah puts the Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa about 55 miles and 1 hour south, San Francisco International about 127 miles and 2.5 hours south, and Sacramento International about 138 miles southeast. For downtown, take Exit 549, Perkins Street and Vichy Springs Road.
Without a car, Mendocino Transit Authority Route 65 CC Rider runs every day between Fort Bragg, Willits, Ukiah and Santa Rosa. Southbound buses stop at the Sonoma County Airport and the SMART train on request; northbound buses stop there on schedule. MTA changed Route 65 service on 14 Sep 2026, so check the current timetable. Routes 65 and 95 run daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas, and every MTA bus is wheelchair accessible with a 2-bike rack.
In town, Redwood Taxi and Taxi 707 provide on-call rides 24 hours a day, and about 2 miles of Great Redwood Trail multi-use path run through the city. Ukiah Municipal Airport (UKI) has a 4,415-foot lighted runway one mile south of downtown for private pilots.
On the road, keep cannabis sealed or in the trunk: an open container in a vehicle is illegal in California. Cannabis is still illegal under federal law, so do not take it across state lines or onto federal land. Our tourist rules guide covers the details.

Several licensed shops sit along State Street, and Cannavine is in Airport Park at the south end of town. Cannavine is at 1230 Airport Park Boulevard off Talmage Road: take the Airport Park Boulevard exit from US-101, and park in front of the store. Cannavine puts it about five minutes south of downtown and School Street. Kure's South Ukiah store at 1480 South State Street is about 0.4 mile away in a straight line, as is Heritage Mendocino at 1076 Cunningham Street, just off Talmage Road, where visitors can watch solventless hash being made.
Downtown, Vibe by California is at 441 North State Street, about 1.5 miles north of Cannavine in a straight line. Its own page lists 9am to 9pm every day and says the store has plenty of parking.
For downtown, use US-101 Exit 549, Perkins Street and Vichy Springs Road. Ukiah Municipal Airport (UKI), one mile south of downtown, serves private pilots; the City of Ukiah names the Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa as the region's commercial airport. Redwood Taxi and Taxi 707 run 24 hours a day.

Ukiah sits in the Emerald Triangle: Mendocino, Humboldt and Trinity counties, which ABC News described in 2010 as specializing in cannabis production since the mid-1970s. Ukiah is the Mendocino County seat, according to Visit Ukiah.
Visit Ukiah says cannabis first appeared in the annual Mendocino County Crop Report in 1979, valued at about $90 million, second only to timber at $128 million. In 2010 an unnamed county official told ABC News that cannabis, though not listed in the annual crop report, was the county's major crop.
In July 2008, Mendocino County's sheriff and district attorney said they would not enforce the plant limits of voter-approved Measure B while legal challenges were pending, and would keep allowing 25 plants. The Emerald Cup started in the early 2000s as an after-harvest party for Emerald Triangle growers in Mendocino County (Press Democrat reports give 2003 and 2004), and its founder, Tim Blake, lived in Laytonville as of 2021.
The county's tourism commission calls cannabis part of Mendocino County's heritage. Visit Ukiah also notes that Hopland, south of Ukiah on US-101, is named for the hop growing that once made the county a major hop supplier.

No Mendocino cannabis appellation exists yet. As of 23 Sep 2026, the Cannabis Appellations Program page of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) said it was not accepting petitions to establish an appellation of origin and expected to open petitions in late 2026.
The idea dates to Proposition 64 in 2016. Only licensed outdoor cultivators may petition, and the mature flowering plants must be grown without structures or artificial light inside the proposed boundary. CDFA published modified proposed rules on 3 Jul 2026 and took public comment until 24 Aug 2026.
Until the program opens, read any Mendocino origin claim on a label as the brand's own description, not a state appellation. Our label guide explains what a California label must show.

Source · mendocinotransit.orgInside city limits, a cannabis retailer needs a city use permit and a state license, keeps to set hours and controls where customers consume. Ukiah City Code section 9174.3 states: "Hours of operation are limited to nine o'clock (9:00) A.M. to nine o'clock (9:00) P.M., seven (7) days a week."
On consumption, the code states that, outside an approved area, "cannabis shall not be consumed on the premises of the cannabis retailer, nor within any accessory structures, parking areas, or other surroundings within two hundred feet (200') of the cannabis retailer's entrance." It adds: "Cannabis may be consumed in a designated cannabis consumption area on the premises of a cannabis retailer upon approval of a use permit or modification of an existing use permit."
A consumption area that is not enclosed, such as a patio or deck, may allow smoking, vaping and edibles; the city's definitions limit an indoor area to edibles. The code also says: "No person may consume cannabis, by smoking or vaporization, in any public places." Public places include streets, sidewalks, alleys, highways and public parking lots, plus city-owned parks and city-sponsored events where the City Council has designated them nonsmoking.
Other city rules: a cannabis business must be at least 600 feet from a school unless the Planning Commission grants a waiver because a physical barrier or other condition achieves the same purpose, city retailers may deliver to adults 21+ inside and outside the city, and a retailer may use up to 150 square feet of floor space for pipes, papers and other devices. Ukiah repealed its old stand-alone cannabis retailer chapter in 2022, and Ordinance 1253 (2025) is the latest amendment shown in the code text we read on 23 Sep 2026.
Under Ukiah City Code, as amended by Ordinance 1253 in March 2025, a new cannabis retailer may not open within 250 feet of another, measured along the street frontage, unless a waiver is granted, and on-site consumption needs a use permit or a change to the shop's existing one, which the Planning Commission has decided case by case at public hearings, approving outdoor consumption areas in September 2023 and April 2024, the second with smoking and vaping barred. The Mendocino Voice reported in October 2024 that on-site consumption is usually permitted for dispensaries on the outskirts of Ukiah but not downtown. Shops outside city limits, such as Kure South Ukiah, follow Mendocino County rules instead.

Only on private property that allows it, or in a shop's permitted consumption area. City code bans smoking or vaping cannabis in public places. Outside an approved consumption area, it also bans any cannabis use on a retailer's premises or in its accessory structures, parking areas or other surroundings within 200 feet of its entrance. California hotels have been smoke-free by law since 1 Jan 2024, guest rooms included.
Visit Mendocino County, the county tourism commission, describes consumption lounges at Kure Wellness and Plantshop in Ukiah and an outdoor consumption lounge at Heritage Mendocino. It also describes a lounge at Compassionate Heart Dispensary in Ukiah. Heritage Mendocino's own site, checked 1 Oct 2026, does not mention a lounge. We have not verified any of those lounge permits, and the page does not say which Kure location has the lounge, so ask the shop first.
DCC data refreshed 22 Sep 2026 show active licenses for Plantshop (C12-0000282-LIC, 2031 Wellmar Drive), Heritage Mendocino (C12-0000258-LIC, 1076 Cunningham Street) and Compassionate Heart Mutual Benefit Association (C10-0000465-LIC, 190 Kuki Lane). In December 2022, The Press Democrat reported that at least one Ukiah dispensary was licensed for on-site consumption.
If you cannot find a permitted lounge, buy for later and use it where you are staying, with the owner's permission. Our edibles basics guide explains labels and onset times before you try anything new.
