Bronx dispensaries: OCM-licensed shops and CAURD (2026)

Cannabis City Guides covers licensed cannabis retail in the Bronx. Adult-use sales in New York are limited to people 21 and older at stores licensed by the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM). On 23 Sep 2026, OCM's verification list named 22 dispensaries with a Bronx address. Most Bronx stores hold CAURD licenses, New York's first adult-use retail licenses, which went to businesses majority owned by people with a New York marihuana conviction from before 31 Mar 2021 or their close family, and to qualifying nonprofits.

OCM's public verification list named 22 licensed dispensaries with a Bronx address on 23 Sep 2026. In OCM's license data checked the same day, 17 of the 23 operating Bronx retail licenses are CAURD licenses, the program New York used to open its first adult-use stores.

This guide is for visitors heading to Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo or the New York Botanical Garden, and for locals who want to know which storefronts are licensed. It lists BX Buddiez and Conbud on Third Avenue in the South Bronx, Herbwell on East Fordham Road, about 0.12 mi from the Fordham Metro-North station, and Guardian Wellness on Arthur Avenue near the Zoo and the Botanical Garden, with the train or bus to each.

The short version: you must be 21 with valid ID, retail taxes total 13%, and you cannot smoke or vape cannabis in parks, public gardens, stadium grounds, any business or a car. Our New York cannabis laws page has the full state rules, and the first dispensary visit guide explains what happens at the counter.

How buying works here

  1. 01Age and ID: You must be 21 or older. OCM's consumer delivery FAQ lists a passport from any country, IDNYC, and U.S. federal, state or local government photo ID showing your age as valid identification.
  2. 02Possession limit: Adults 21 and older may have up to 3 oz of cannabis and 24 g of concentrated cannabis. NYC Health adds that you may store up to 5 pounds at home.
  3. 03Taxes: Retail taxes total 13%, made up of a 9% state retail excise tax and a 4% local excise tax. Adult-use cannabis is exempt from sales tax.
  4. 04Licensed stores only: Every licensed dispensary must post OCM's Dispensary Verification Tool near its main entrance. Scan it, or check OCM's dispensary list, before you buy.
  5. 05Delivery: Licensed delivery can go to homes and private businesses in New York, not to parks, public spaces or anyone in a vehicle. The delivery worker checks ID again before completing the order.
  6. 06Leaving New York: It is illegal to take cannabis across state lines, including medical cannabis, so do not carry it to New Jersey, Connecticut or on a flight out of New York.

How do you get to the Bronx's licensed shops without a car?

Take the subway, Metro-North or a bus. Guardian Wellness on Arthur Avenue is about 0.38 mi from Metro-North's Fordham station and 0.68 mi from the Fordham Rd station on the B and D. BX Buddiez is about 0.15 mi from the 3 Av-149 St station on the 2 and 5, Conbud's Mott Haven store is about 0.26 mi from 3 Av-138 St on the 6, and Herbwell is about 0.12 mi from Metro-North's Fordham station. These are straight-line distances from each address, so the walk is a little longer.

On the Third Avenue corridor, 3 Av-149 St is fully accessible. The Bx15 runs along Third Avenue between Fordham Plaza and The Hub, and both the Bx15 and Bx21 stop at 3 Av and E 153 St, about 180 m from BX Buddiez. Farther south in Mott Haven, neither 3 Av-138 St (6) nor 138 St-Grand Concourse (4, 5) is ADA accessible. The closest accessible station there is 125 St (4, 5, 6), across the Harlem River in Manhattan.

On East Fordham Road, Fordham station serves Metro-North's Harlem and New Haven lines and has elevators. It connects to the Fordham Rd subway and to the Bx9, Bx12, Bx15, Bx17, Bx22 and Bx41 buses, including Bx41 Select Bus Service. The Bx12, which runs between Pelham Bay and Inwood via Fordham Road, also has Select Bus Service.

Metro-North's Melrose station, the closest rail stop to BX Buddiez at about 0.56 mi, is not accessible. MTA names Harlem-125th Street and Fordham as the nearest accessible stations on the Harlem Line. BX Buddiez says street parking is usually available near its store, but we have not verified parking at the other three, so if you drive, read the posted signs, and remember that cannabis cannot be smoked in a car, moving or parked.

Neighborhoods, transit, parking

Two of the four stores on this page are on Third Avenue in the South Bronx: BX Buddiez (2935 Third Avenue, between 152nd and 153rd streets) and Conbud's Mott Haven store (2412 Third Avenue), about 1.0 mi apart in a straight line. The Bx15 bus runs along Third Avenue between Fordham Plaza and The Hub.

Herbwell (372 East Fordham Road) is about 0.12 mi from Metro-North's Fordham station and about 0.28 mi from the Fordham Rd station on the B and D. The Bx9 and Bx22 stop about 40 m away at East Fordham Rd and Decatur Av, and the Bx12 stops about 110 m away at Webster Av. The Botanical Garden's main entrance is about 0.63 mi east.

OCM's verification list includes other Bronx stores, for example on Hunts Point Ave and Williamsbridge Rd, so use it to find them. BX Buddiez says street parking is usually available near its store; we have not verified parking at the other three. If you drive, read the posted signs, and keep cannabis closed in its packaging in the car.

What is a CAURD dispensary, and why did New York license them first?

A CAURD dispensary holds a Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary license, the first adult-use retail license New York issued. OCM says CAURD licensees were the first retail dispensaries to open for legal adult-use sales in the state, as businesses owned by justice-involved people.

OCM defines a justice-involved person as someone convicted of a marihuana-related offense in New York State before 31 Mar 2021, someone whose parent, spouse, child, legal guardian or dependent was so convicted, or someone who was the dependent of a person so convicted. The conviction has to be from New York; out-of-state and federal convictions do not count.

Under the business route, at least 30% of a CAURD applicant had to be owned by one justice-involved person with qualifying business experience, and the business had to be majority owned by justice-involved people. Nonprofits with a record of serving current or formerly incarcerated people could apply under a separate route.

OCM's stated reason was to speed investment into communities hit by the disproportionate enforcement of cannabis prohibition. The wider Cannabis Law sets a goal of awarding 50% of adult-use licenses to social and economic equity applicants and dedicates 40% of adult-use cannabis tax revenue to reinvestment in communities disproportionately impacted by prohibition.

Most Bronx stores hold CAURD licenses. Of the 23 operating Bronx retail licenses in OCM's data on 23 Sep 2026, 17 are CAURD licenses. BX Buddiez and Conbud's Mott Haven store both hold CAURD licenses, and Conbud describes itself as owned and operated by formerly incarcerated and justice-impacted people. Herbwell on East Fordham Road holds a standard adult-use retail license, and OCM lists it as minority- and women-owned.

Why does the Bronx figure in New York's cannabis equity story?

Bronx neighborhoods had some of New York City's highest marijuana arrest rates from 2010 to 2017. A December 2018 analysis by then-Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, using 2010 to 2017 arrest data, found nearly half of all Bronx neighborhoods among the city's top ten by arrest rate.

Concourse, Highbridge and Mount Eden ranked third in the city, with 8,143 arrests over those eight years and an average annual arrest rate of 710 per 100,000 people. Belmont, Crotona Park East and East Tremont (655 per 100,000 a year) and Bedford Park, Fordham North and Norwood (642 per 100,000 a year) also appear in the report's top-ten table. Brooklyn had the most arrests of any borough in that period, followed by the Bronx.

Citywide, 86.5% of marijuana arrests from 2010 to 2017 were of Black and Latinx people and 10.5% were of white people, according to the same report. When New York legalized adult use, the Legislature found that existing marihuana laws had disproportionately impacted African-American and Latinx communities, and, according to OCM, the law automatically expunges records of past convictions for cannabis activities that are no longer crimes.

Prosecution was already falling before legalization. The Data Collaborative for Justice at John Jay College found that district attorneys' declinations to prosecute marijuana possession arrests rose sharply in all five boroughs from 2017 to 2020. The Bronx Times reported 437 marijuana possession arrests citywide in 2020, 109 of them in the Bronx.

How do you tell a licensed Bronx dispensary from a smoke shop?

Look for OCM's Dispensary Verification Tool near the main entrance, then check the store on OCM's dispensary list. Every licensed dispensary in New York must post the tool near its main entrance, and OCM says legal shops always display it and link to its verification list.

The sample seal OCM publishes reads "New York State Licensed Cannabis Dispensary" with the instruction "Scan to verify". Licensed products carry a universal symbol, and a QR code or URL on the package leads to the product's lab certificate of analysis.

OCM's public verification list named 22 dispensaries with a Bronx address on 23 Sep 2026. OCM's license data, checked the same day, counted 23 active, operating adult-use retail licenses in Bronx County. The difference is a CAURD store at 1260 Castle Hill Ave that opened on 15 Jun 2026 and was not yet on the list. Counted by street address in OCM's license data on 16 Oct 2026, including microbusinesses that sell at retail, there were 99 operating licensed retail locations in Manhattan, 87 in Brooklyn, 79 in Queens and 16 on Staten Island.

Verilife's Bronx store says it serves medical patients only, so adult-use shoppers cannot buy there.

OCM investigates every incident report about a potential illicit shop, and removing a padlock from a sealed storefront is illegal. By 31 Jul 2024, the city's Operation Padlock to Protect task force had sealed 779 illegal locations citywide. On 10 Jun 2026, News 12 reported that sheriff's deputies seized more than 800 pounds of illegal products at an unlicensed smoke shop on East Gun Hill Road in Pelham Gardens that had allegedly cut through a city padlock.

Going to Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo or the Botanical Garden?

Leave cannabis out of the day. Yankee Stadium bans smoking, including e-cigarettes, has no designated smoking areas and does not allow re-entry. The Bronx Zoo calls itself a smoke-free park, and NYC Health lists public gardens and the inside and grounds of sports stadiums among places where smoking or vaping cannabis is not permitted.

Yankee Stadium is at One East 161st Street. The 4 and D stop at 161st Street/Yankee Stadium, with B service on weekdays only, and Metro-North's Yankees-E 153 St station on the Hudson Line is accessible, with limited cash ticket sales on home game days only. BX Buddiez is about 1.05 mi from the stadium in a straight line, and OCM's list also includes a second Conbud store at 898 Gerard Ave, listed as CONBUD by Yankee Stadium.

The Bronx Zoo (2300 Southern Boulevard) covers more than 265 acres and has over 11,000 animals. Its accessible subway route is the 2 to Pelham Parkway. From Metro-North, the zoo suggests the Harlem Line to Fordham, then the Bx9 east to 183rd Street and Southern Blvd. The BxM11 express bus runs from Madison Avenue in Manhattan to the zoo's Bronx River entrance (Gate B).

The New York Botanical Garden (2900 Southern Blvd) is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, and on Monday federal holidays. NYBG says the Metro-North Harlem local reaches Botanical Garden Station in about 20 minutes from Grand Central. NYBG says the MTA is renovating the station through 2026. The overpass has been closed since 21 Jul 2026, southbound riders follow a posted detour, and NYBG advises allowing 10 to 15 extra minutes to reach the station.

Where can you use cannabis in the Bronx?

In a private home, or in most places where tobacco use is allowed, with exceptions. New York allows adults 21 and older to consume cannabis in a private home or in most places where tobacco use is allowed, but not in a motor vehicle, a private business, a hookah or cigar bar, or on federal property.

In New York City, NYC Health names restaurants, parks, event spaces and any business, including cannabis dispensaries. Its fact sheet adds beaches and boardwalks, pedestrian plazas, public gardens, and the inside and grounds of sports stadiums. Smoking or vaping cannabis in a prohibited place can bring a civil summons and fine.

NYCHA bans smoking tobacco and cannabis inside public housing apartments, in all indoor common areas and within 25 feet of its buildings. Hotel owners and landlords can ban smoking or vaping cannabis on their property, so you may not be able to consume in a hotel room.

OCM says a state law in effect since 13 Oct 2022 bans smoking cannabis and tobacco in all New York State Parks and other public outdoor spaces. Penal Law bars smoking, vaping or ingesting cannabis on school grounds, and cannabis cannot be used on federal land. Adults 21 and older may share cannabis with other adults for free within the possession limit, but "gifting" tied to a paid product or service is prohibited.

Deliveries can go to homes and private businesses in New York, not to parks, public spaces or anyone in a vehicle, and the delivery worker checks ID again before completing the order.

Is the Verilife dispensary in the Bronx recreational?

No. Verilife's Bronx store says it serves medical patients only, and its page title reads "Medical Cannabis Near You". Adult-use shoppers need a licensed adult-use dispensary instead.
